Mark Hermann

You could say I discovered music production quite by accident. This would be about the time when I was like seventeen and first heard Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced. I would spend hours trying to learn some of those strange guitar solos, like the one on the title track and I could never figure out why, no matter what I did, I couldn't make my guitar sound like Jimi on the solo. Then one day a friend told me that the solo was actually backwards guitar and explained how they did it in the studio. Well, I just had to know more and found myself studying the genius of Eddie Kramer and how the producer really crafts the sound of a record. This led to a lifelong quest to seek out all the great secrets of the studio Gods.

But if  the guitar is my church, the song is my religion. Everything begins and ends with the song and a good producer knows that his job is to do whatever will best serve the song and realize an artists' vision. But if you don't have a good song to start with, then all the king's studio tricks and all the king's FX cannot make a bad song good.

I have included here some examples of my production work. Click on the CD image to hear the artists and learn more about them. Enjoy!
